The Deep Hope in my classroom is, “Open my heart to Your story as I enter into others’ and share my own.”
However, what does that look like and feel like in our day-to-day interactions with each other?
The questions displayed on the bulletin board image below helped guide our exploration of this topic and were the foundation for students’ research. Each student chose a topic that could be researched using relevant and reliable sources . . . and from two different perspectives. There’s always more to a story than what we first think.
In the students’ words, when we listen to other people’s stories,
- We understand what they go through.
- We can learn to be more inclusive, forgiving, and grace-giving.
- It can deepen knowledge to see why people act/treat others based on experiences.
- We become more aware of the bigger picture and what’s going [on in] other people’s lives and not just ours.
- It can help people connect and realize they are not alone.
And when we share our own stories,
- We want to feel heard and have people understand where we are coming from.
- It can take the weight off our chest.
- It provides relief and builds bonds.
- We become more open and we lower our guard.
- It is good […] because we all have one. They make us who we are.
